Last night, President Joe Biden delivered his annual State of the Union Address to Congress, and took the opportunity to elevate some of his top education priorities. In the context of international competitiveness and economic prosperity, Biden called for preschool for 3- and 4-year olds, citing the long-term positive academic and economic outcomes for investing in the early years. He added, “So while we’re at it, I want to give public school teachers a raise,” a statement that got a standing ovation from Members of Congress. Biden also stated, “I want to expand high-quality tutoring and summer learning to see that every child learns to read by third grade.” The remarks come days before Biden is expected to release his budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2025, indicating that he will continue to tout increased investments across education programs.
