Congress Readies Bill to Provide Extension of Pending Annual Funding Decisions
Next week, the House of Representatives is poised to take up a continuing resolution (CR) that would allow Congress more time to finalize spending for Fiscal Year 2022. The measure would extend current funding levels for a couple months, likely creating a new deadline in early December.
The CR is expected to advance in a package that will also include hurricane and flood relief funds and could also potentially include a measure to avoid U.S. debt default, which is looming this fall if Congress fails to act. While a CR delays important decisions such as increases to funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), it is not a surprising move—Congress has been unable to meet its annual spending deadlines since 1995.
