Guiding with Purpose: Mentorship in the Diversity Leadership Academy

The Council for Exceptional Children’s Diversity Leadership Academy (DLA) supports early-career special educators through mentorship focused on equity, inclusion, and leadership. A key feature of the program is its mentorship component, which pairs each scholar with a seasoned leader in the field.

From 2024 to 2025, Dr. Randa G. Keeley, Associate Professor of Special Education at Texas Woman’s University, mentored Amanda Kramer, a Resource Specialist and Department Chair in California’s Mount Diablo Unified School District. Amanda joined DLA to grow as a leader and advocate for systemic change in special education.

In her second year at the school, Amanda was named department chair, an exciting but daunting challenge, especially within a team where she was the youngest member by more than 15 years. Dr. Keeley helped her navigate this transition, offering support and strategies around team building, managing complex student cases, and even exploring doctoral studies.

A pivotal conversation focused on building trust within Amanda’s department. Dr. Keeley encouraged practices such as inviting open feedback, advocating consistently for team members, and creating space for shared celebrations. Amanda implemented these ideas with great success, fostering stronger relationships and a more collaborative department culture.

Reflecting on her own path, Dr. Keeley said, “Had it not been for mentors at key moments, I may not have remained in education. Even though it is rewarding work, it comes with challenges.”

Their relationship was mutually rewarding: “I’ve learned so much about Amanda’s responsibilities, practices, and future goals,” Dr. Keeley shared. “She is a passionate and courageous advocate.”

Amanda encouraged future DLA scholars to dive in fully: “Be a sponge and absorb as much as possible.”
